Legal transcriptionists listen to dictated recordings made by attorneys, paralegals, and other legal professionals and transcribe them into legal documents. They generally listen to recordings on a headset, using a foot pedal to pause the recording when necessary, and key the text into a computer. The documents they produce include correspondence, pleadings, motions, discovery, legal memoranda, agreements, and time entries.

Typical Duties of a Legal Transcriptionist

Legal transcriptionist work can be varied and can include:

  • Transcribing recordings from any legal proceeding
  • Revising transcriptions made from legal proceedings
  • Proofreading and revising legal forms and documents
  • Preparing legal paperwork to file in person or online
  • Drafting legal documents, such as pleadings or discovery
  • Transcribe 911 tapes and other legal documents and take them all the way from rough draft to final copy
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, memos, legal briefs, pleadings, charging documents, amended information, supplemental summaries, jury instructions, witness lists and subpoenas.
