So, you think you are ready to get into the transcription game, but you are unsure of the transcription tools you need to propel you on your way to success.
What Gets You to Transcription Success?
The new year is here, and you are all geared up to start your own transcription business working from home. You’re all excited that you’re going to get rich doing transcription. Ummm, not so fast grasshopper – there are transcription tools that will help you.
Besides having your brain, your fingers, and if you use a foot pedal, your feet, there are reputable resources you can, and should, rely on. As I was reading through the Internet when writing this article, I found the below advice from Janet Shaughnessy at https://transcribeanywhere.com/about/
“You can’t be successful in your profession if you don’t use the proper tools that your fellow colleagues use… and that your clients expect you to know and use.”

Rather than reinvent the wheel, I highly recommend that you take a look at her article, “10+ Tools for Transcriptionists Who Want to Make Money.”
I agree with all the tools that she recommends. I would add, however, if you are not going to rely strictly on the Internet to check your spelling of words, I would use a small hard-cover spell checker. I have an old one put out by Merriam Webster that I still use today, and it’s small enough that it does not take up a lot of room on my desk.
Oh, I forgot to mention that I do use consistently other sources of information. It’s not unusual for virtual assistants and transcriptionists to use some of the same sources. Just be sure that your transcription tools are high quality.
What Good Are Transcription Tools
The one thing you are probably wondering is what good are transcription tools if you don’t have clients? By now, you might be wondering what the job market is like for Business or Legal transcription. Is it possible you really can succeed?
Yes, you CAN succeed. Just take a look at Transcribe Anywhere and scroll through some of the Success Interviews that Janet has posted on her website. If they don’t give you some inspiration, I don’t know what will.
I’m going to list some sites that I found on the Internet. Other than Birch Creek Communications and Kendall Creek Communications, I don’t have any first-hand knowledge for the websites I’m listing below. Both of these sites are not listed in BBB.org that I could find. They are both located in Montana using the same address. Also, they both advertise that they are both members of the American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers (AAERT). In addition, they both have a tab on their websites for Employment Opportunities for transcription positions.
So, here goes. Please make sure you do your own research on the sites below…and don’t be hasty. I mean, really, REALLY do your research. There are plenty of websites that are less than reputable.

Transcription Tools Recap
There are many industries that need good business (or general) and legal transcribers. Obviously, the more expertise you have, the more money you can make. But, in order to be successful, you must have and use transcription tools. You can also get more money by having a good education customized for those wanting to get into transcription.
Borlok Transcription started doing transcription in 2006, and started out doing all sorts of transcription. We started out in the freelance marketplaces like Elance.com and oDesk.com (now known as Upwork.com). It took us while to feel comfortable doing transcription, but we hung in there – and you can too!
